The Beginning

Many people associate food with memories, I guess that could be true. When I first ate a pear, it was awful. The texture was grainy, as if I was eating something that had been rolled around in fine, invisible sand. The smell was akin to slightly rotten wood. I could hear the tear of the flesh when I bit into it. But then, I came to Japan.

To me the Japanese pear, called nashi, is a harder, more round, more gritty, a more sturdy food. It is most popular in autumn, which is my favorite season. I came to love them here in Japan and in turn began to appreciate the other as well. It still amazes me that I can recall with such clarity the first time I ate a pear.

And so I have decided to share my love-hate relationship with food and in particular Japanese food. I’ll try not to pretend to know everything. My goal is simply to make Japanese food more pleasurable to western palates and more accessible in the western kitchen, so that in turn you’ll learn to love it as much as I do.

My current job allows me the opportunity to sample and try all kinds of new products and requires me to try and sell them. So let’s give this blog thing a try.

I hope you’ll find it entertaining and keep coming back for more recipes and ideas. Please feel free to comment about anything you see here or even on the company website.
